Lou Holtz Sounds Off Ryan Day After Loss To Michigan Football

Earlier this fall, Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day went ballistic after his team’s narrow 17-14 win over Notre Dame. “I want to know where (ex-FIghting Irish coach) Lou Holtz is right now,” Day yelled, ranting about the 86-year-old former coach, who implied that Notre Dame was a tougher team than the Buckeyes before the game. Well, as it turns out, Holtz was not all that off about OSU not being a tough program, as was evident once again when Day had to face Michigan football. After the game, Holtz got the last laugh against Day.

Ryan Day’s post-game reaction to beating Notre Dame is one that will forever live in infamy — especially since Lou Holtz was spot on about Ohio State not being able to stop tougher football teams like Michigan.

On Saturday, the Wolverines picked up their third straight win over the Buckeyes; this time, earning a 30-24 win at the Big House, improving to 12-0 overall (9-0 Big Ten) heading into this weekend’s Big Ten title bout against Iowa (10-2, 7-2 Big Ten).

After the Wolverines’ impressive win, the former Notre Dame coach seemed to enjoy getting the last laugh against Ryan Day quite a bit.

“Losing to Michigan three years in a row is not good,” Holtz said with a smirk. “He will be (in hot water) — what a long ride home that must be.

“Three years in a row (Ohio State) has lost to the University of Michigan. Having coached at Ohio State under Woody Hayes, we played (Michigan football) under the same circumstances — winner would have a chance to go to the Rose Bowl (and) win a national championship. Fortunately, we were the ones that were able to do it — we scored late in the game, went for two, made it, and beat (Michigan) 50-14. They asked Woody (Hayes) why he went for two, and he said, ‘Because they wouldn’t let me go for three.'”

The era of Lou Holtz, Bo Schmbechler, and Woody Hayes is long gone, though their legacies at Notre Dame, Michigan, and Ohio State live on. That said, while the “10 Years War” is behind us, the Jim Harbaugh-Ryan Day era has been nothing short of entertaining thus far — especially now that Michigan football is 1-0 against the Buckeyes under Sherrone Moore as well.
