LSU star CB Derek Stingley Jr. out indefinitely after foot procedure

A potential top-10 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft may not play again this college football season.

As Alex Scarborough noted for ESPN, LSU Tigers All-American cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. is out indefinitely after he had a medical procedure on his left foot to address an issue that first popped up in the summer and resurfaced after he reinjured the foot last month.

LSU is 3-2 heading into Saturday's matchup against the 5-0 Kentucky Wildcats.

"I appreciate all of the support from LSU and the fans," Stingley said in a statement shared by ESPN. "I'm doing all that I can to return to the field as soon as possible. I want to finish out the season with my teammates and I will do everything I can to get healthy so that I will be able to play again this year."

Meanwhile, LSU coach Ed Orgeron told reporters it's unknown "when or if" Stingley will play for the program again.

Per the LSU website, Stingley burst onto the national scene in 2019 when he finished the season fifth in the country with six interceptions and second with 21 passes defended. Walter Cherepinsky of Walter Football lists the two-time First-Team All-American as the No. 8 overall selection in his latest 2022 NFL mock draft and also added, "Stingley has the ability to end up being a top cornerback prospect for the 2022 NFL Draft" and could be "a top-five prospect whenever he declares."
