LSU star defender's hilarious quote speaks to huge improvements for Tigers under Brian Kelly and Bo Davis

The LSU Tigers have now won five games in a row. They're fresh off an astounding 29-26 overtime victory against Ole Miss this past weekend. Since their Week 1 loss against USC the Tigers have allowed 27 points on defense just one time. How did LSU flip the script on their defensive woes, pushing themselves firmly back into the College Football Playoff discussion?

It wasn't easy, but Brian Kelly brought the right staff in to make it happen. And one hilarious quote from LSU's star edge defender Bradyn Swinson perfectly sums up the huge defensive improvements best.

Swinson met with the media this week and spent plenty of time talking up his coaches like Bo Davis and Kevin Peoples, his teammates and more, but when asked about his pivotal 4th and 1 spot he kept it simple (find the full interview in the video below):

"I feel like that was my biggest play of my career...Coaches putting us in the right spots, you know. We didn't get the [defensive play] call, but you know, you just got check 'whoop ass' sometimes and just go get the ball. That's all you've got to do."

The LSU Tigers' defense is playing fast and loose this season in a way that they simply were not a year ago. Swinson's comment is rather funny, but it speaks to the excellent coaching and huge steps the defensive unit has taken forward in order to be able to execute in crunch time.

If you're unfamiliar with the play Swinson's talking about, it was 4th down and 1 yard to gain on the 4-yard line for the Lane Kiffin's offense. Ole Miss rushed to the line, hoping to get an easy first and goal, which would have likely set up a quick score that could have put the game out of reach for LSU down the stretch.

Despite not getting an official defensive play call in time or a personnel change to better fit goal line defense, Swinson and the entire LSU defense stopped the Rebels for a loss, leading to a turnover on downs. Head Coach Brian Kelly broke the play down in detail on his weekly Film Room session in the video post below:

It's plays like Bradyn Swinson's 4th down stop that just simply didn't happen a year ago. LSU ranked outside the Top 100 in yards per play, total yards allowed, and most key categories in 2023. This year after critical staff changes along the defensive front with Bo Davis and Kevin Peoples, the entire unit is playing more in sync.

LSU leaped up the defensive ranks this year by more than 30 spots in almost every single category compared to last season, but the one area they're really looking like the elite LSU defenses of old? The pass rush.

Bradyn Swinson has a way of talking about his process and success rather casually, but he's been LSU's best defensive player, coming up with game-breaking plays all season long, often with a big sack or pressure of the opposing quarterback. He himself has seven sacks now on the year, but LSU as a defensive unit ranks fourth in the nation with 3.5 sacks logged per game. Last year they ranked outside the top forty.

Swinson and his fellow edge rushers Sai'vion Jones and Da'Shawn Womack (in limited action) collectively have 53 pass rush pressures between just those three players. Paris Shand has another 11 as the team's flex-tech player who wins pass rushing from every single pre-snap alignment. The entire defensive front has just completely changed for the better, and that's largely been without Harold Perkins in the fold due to his injury.

If LSU's defense keeps playing fast, loose, free, but with discipline to make quick adjustments like they did on many occasions against Ole Miss last week, the Tigers could seriously push to make a playoff run. And they most certainly should take care of business against Arkansas this week playing defense like they are.
