The quarterback room at LSU Tigers just got a little thinner — and a little more crowded at the same time. Redshirt freshman quarterback Emile Picarella has officially left the program, confirming the news to LSU reporter Matt Moscona this week. Picarella said he was grateful for his time in Baton Rouge, even as he chose to move on.

“I’ve decided to move on from LSU,” Picarella told Moscona. “I’ll always appreciate my teammates, the old and new staff, and the opportunity I had there. I wish the program nothing but success.”

Picarella arrived at LSU as a preferred walk-on and was viewed as a developmental quarterback with local ties to Louisiana. The former three-star prospect did not appear in a game last season and took a redshirt year instead. But the situation around him changed quickly once LSU overhauled its quarterback room this offseason.

The Tigers recently added Kaden Martin through the transfer portal, creating another layer of competition at the position. Martin’s arrival came shortly before Picarella’s departure became public, and the timing immediately drew attention across college football circles.

Martin is the son of Tee Martin, the former Tennessee national championship quarterback who recently joined LSU’s staff as an offensive analyst. Kaden originally pursued baseball before returning to football and eventually landing at Middle Tennessee State.

Lane Kiffin Keeps Reshaping LSU’s Quarterback Room

Since taking over at LSU, Kiffin has aggressively rebuilt the quarterback depth chart through transfers. The Tigers already added several new faces before bringing in Martin, signaling that experience and competition would be priorities heading into the 2026 season.

That approach may strengthen LSU’s overall depth, but it also leaves younger quarterbacks fighting for limited opportunities. For Picarella, the writing was likely on the wall once the room became increasingly packed with transfers and experienced options.

LSU’s expected starter remains transfer quarterback Sam Leavitt, while the Tigers have also added additional depth pieces behind him. With Martin now entering the picture as well, Picarella’s path to meaningful snaps became even harder to see.

Even so, Picarella handled his exit professionally. Rather than airing frustrations publicly, he thanked both the coaching staff and his teammates before stepping away from the program.

For LSU, the move is another sign of how quickly college football rosters can change in the transfer portal era. For Picarella, it may simply be the start of a new opportunity elsewhere.
