Matt Rhule doesn't want to get into it. It's not because he has information one way or the other about quarterback Dylan Raiola's future with the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
You'd have to imagine he at least has some idea what Raiola wants to do. What Rhule doesn't want to get into is the impact, if any, his decision to fire offensive line coach Donovan Raiola will have on his star quarterback.
Perhaps he has an idea of how it will play out, but when asked about it in a news conference recently, Nebraska's head coach decided that it wasn't his place.
"You guys know I’m not going to talk about any player’s future. Like, I’m just not doing that. That’s their job. It’s each player’s job. They have to announce their own thing because I would never want to misspeak," Rhule said.
While Rhule has recently spoken like he believes the former five-star quarterback will be coming back for his junior season at Nebraska, that's not a guarantee, considering all the NIL money that's out there and the freedom Raiola has to transfer at basically any time.
Also, if you read the tea leaves, something seems to be brewing in Lincoln. His younger brother, Dayton Raiola, had been committed to the Cornhuskers for over a year, but he recently decommitted from the program.
Now, Rhule has fired Dylan's uncle? It was a tough move, per Rhule, but it was also one he felt he had to make in the best interests of the program.
“I talked to the whole team about Donnie and certainly to Dylan. That’s his uncle. He loves him. So, I certainly talked to him but I talked to all the O-linemen, I talked to all the guys. I mean, Donnie was loved by a lot of guys," Rhule said. "So, at the end of the day, I don’t like firing people. I don’t like affecting their families, I don’t like moving on from people."
Nebraska is no longer associated with two of the three Raiolas connected to the program.
Will the star quarterback follow his family out the door?
We'll have to wait and see, but it's going to be interesting to watch it all play out.
