Mel Kiper says it's a two-man race for first pick in 2021 NFL Draft

We are less than two weeks removed from this year's NFL draft, which means it's the perfect time for experts like Mel Kiper Jr. to begin speculating about next year's draft. Kiper was on "Get Up" Tuesday morning, where he declared that there would be a two-man race between Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields for the top pick in next year's draft.

Lawrence landed at the top of Kiper's 2021 Big Board and the longtime draft expert said that Fields is the only person he can really see challenging the Clemson quarterback for the No. 1 spot in next year's draft.

"It's a two-horse race," Kiper said.

Still, Kiper noted that at this point, he sees it as Lawrence's spot to lose due to his impressive résumé.

"Right now I put Trevor Lawrence at number one because of his overall body of work over his first two years at Clemson," Kiper explained.

While Clemson lost to LSU in this year's title game, Lawrence remains one of the most highly-touted prospects in college football. It is widely believed that barring any major changes, Lawrence will be taken at the top of next year's draft.

However, Fields has managed to work his way into the discussion thanks to his impressive play at Ohio State last season, where he finished third in the Heisman race. According to Kiper, if anyone is going to be able to challenge Lawrence, it's Fields.

Kiper was also asked if there were any relatively unknown players that might make a jump by next year's draft. Kiper said he believed it would be Trey Lance, a quarterback from North Dakota State, who could see an upwards trajectory similar to Jordan Love this year.
