Considering it’s the second-winningest school in the College Football Playoff era that hasn’t yet played in the tournament, Memphis continues to go unnoticed.

Memphis beat Tulane, took down USF, and it even went into Florida State and came away with a 20-12 win, but it all fizzled away with losses to Navy and UTSA. Beating a depleted West Virginia in the Frisco Bowl was nice, but …

It was the second-winningest season in school history, and it became an afterthought in a State with the big flagship school going to the College Football Playoff, and with Vanderbilt pulling out one of its most impressive seasons in a long time.

So now Silverfield has to keep on grinding out wins.

No Memphis coach has ever won 21 games over two seasons like Silverfield has. Last year was the program’s winningest season behind the massive 12-2 2019 run under Mike Norvell, and there’s the bowl thing.

Memphis has won eight bowl games, and Silverfield has four of the victories, going 4-0. Norvell was 0-4.

And now there’s work to do. This year’s team is undergoing an overhaul of talent; it’ll need fall camp to get all of the pieces together, and as good as Memphis has been, it has to be even splashier.
