We haven't seen Deion Sanders out-recruited by many since he took over for the Colorado Buffaloes. Strange things do happen on the college football recruiting trail, though, and what Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal is building is anything but strange.
Elite would be a better word.
Cristobal and the Hurricanes just stole a massive recruit from Sanders in the form of four-star tight end Gavin Mueller from Wheaton, Illinois.
Mueller, who checks in at 6-foot-5 and 255 pounds, had been committed to Sanders and the Buffaloes since May after an official visit to Boulder. Speaking of official visits, the Hurricanes offered Mueller on Oct. 12, and less than a month later, they were able to get him to Coral Gables for an official.
He was in attendance this past weekend for No. 15 Miami's 41-7 win over NC State, and the vibe at Hard Rock Stadium was apparently too much for him to pass up on. Mueller liked what he saw at Miami, and the flip came just a few days later.
"When I went there, something just clicked," Mueller told InsideTheU."It was kind of a combination of two things; the relationship I built with the coaches in a really fast time from the head man [Mario Cristobal] driving me around on my [official visit] ... giving us a tour was unheard of. Just very hands-on. And even all the way to my single recruiter [Alec Da Silva]. I just feel very connected and feel like I've built a really good relationship with them really fast. Before I went there, I knew the tight end production was good and always will be because they've had a long list of great tight ends there."

The Hurricanes have produced multiple great tight ends over the years. From Kellen Winslow II to Jeremy Shockey to Willie Smith to Greg Olsen.
Speaking of great tight ends, Mueller is ranked as the No. 11 tight end in the country and the No. 8 player from the state of Illinois. His first season of high school football came in his junior year, so he's still extremely raw.
He profiles as an in-line tight end who can be a blocker while also making a ton of plays in the passing game. As a senior at South Elgin High School, he notched 1,325 yards and 30 total touchdowns as a quarterback, tight end and running back. He was also a linebacker on defense.
"I'm just a workhorse," Mueller explained. "That's all I've known my whole life, is that hard work can put you ahead. I'm ready to give everything I got to this program and to my teammates."
Mueller is a football player through and through, and he's joining an elite Miami class that's now ranked No. 11 in the country.
