Miami Transfer Named Top Breakout Candidate in 2025

Bleacher Report highlighted the top defensive players expected to break out in the 2025 college football season . Miami Hurricanes transfer cornerback Xavier Lucas was included on the list.

Lucas' arrival in Coral Gables didn’t come without controversy, but his impact on the Hurricanes' defense could be game-changing.

Lucas initially announced his decision to enter the transfer portal after spending his freshman season at Wisconsin. However, a dispute arose when Wisconsin alleged that Miami had tampered with his recruitment. The Badgers never officially submitted his name into the portal so he ended up bypassing the portal altogether by withdrawing from Wisconsin and then enrolling at Miami.

Lucas made an immediate impact as a freshman, recording an interception in his college debut and proving to be a reliable presence in coverage. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), he allowed just 6.8 yards per target in 2024, showcasing his ability to limit big plays.

Miami's secondary was a glaring weakness last season with the Hurricanes ranking near the bottom of the ACC in pass defense, surrendering over 250 yards per game through the air. With Lucas stepping in alongside fellow standout sophomore OJ Frederique Jr., Miami hopes to solidify a young, talented cornerback duo that can reshape the defensive unit.

While his journey to Miami was unconventional, Lucas now has the opportunity to make headlines for his play rather than his transfer saga. If he continues to develop, he could be a difference-maker for a Miami team looking to compete for an ACC title.
