Miami vs South Florida Prediction: Can the Hurricanes Hold Off the Bulls?

Find two happier teams in college football right now.

Miami got the win it had to have, holding on to get by Notre Dame to make a giant early statement in the national landscape, and followed it up with a near-perfect tune-up against Bethune-Cookman.

That was good, but it’s not close to what South Florida has done.

The Bulls didn’t just open the season by beating Boise State, they dominated in a 34-7 win.

They didn’t just come up with a road win to follow it up, they took down Florida in Gainesville with a thrilling late drive for the walk-off win.

Miami vs South Florida Prediction: Can the Bulls Win Another Huge Road Game?

The USF program doesn’t want to get ahead of itself, but pull this off, and a top-five overall ranking wouldn’t be crazy.

As is, the College Football Playoff is more than just a dream with this the last date against a power program. South Carolina State is next.

Miami gets its own game against the Gators, hosting them in Miami Gardens next week before going to Florida State two weeks later to kick off the ACC season.

Why South Florida Will Win

How are the Bulls doing this?

It starts with winning the mistake battle. They have yet to turn the ball over, are a +4 in turnover margin, and have committed three fewer penalties.

But more than anything else, they’re holding up despite the warp-speed style. The team is one of the worst in the nation in the time of possession battle, but it hasn’t affected the defense yet.

It’s been good enough against the run, quarterback Byrum Brown has been a superstar and leader, and Miami has to be ready to deal with the pace.

Why Miami Will Win

Carson Beck has been terrific.

It’s like everyone forgot that he was the presumptive No. 1 overall draft pick after his 2023 season. Things fell off in 2024, and now he’s back to form as an ultra-efficient passer who’s been around the block a few times.

He’s hitting 78% of his passes with four touchdowns and no picks, and he’s not doing it alone.

He has better receivers than he worked with last year at Georgia, the offensive line is loaded with NFL talent - Francis Mauigoa is a top five overall prospect - and …

Miami Will Methodically Push Past USF

The Hurricanes will do what the Gators couldn’t.

Give South Florida credit; the defense made this happen, but Florida couldn’t keep things moving. The ground game wasn’t strong enough, DJ Lagway struggled on third downs, and the team only managed one lonely fourth quarter touchdown.

The Miami offensive line will take over where the front fives of Boise State and Florida couldn’t. That, and turnovers - Miami won’t give any away.
