Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy passes Tom Brady

There have been some legendary passers to play for the Maize and Blue throughout the years, though the most notable football player to ever wear the winged helmet is ex-Wolverine quarterback Tom Brady. Brady, the greatest player of all time, did not have a very flashy college career; however, he is still among the top QBs in program history. This evening against Michigan State, Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy passed Brady in the school record books.

Heading into this evening’s game against Michigan State in East Lansing, JJ McCarthy had 4,747 passing yards in his Michigan football career. All-time, Tom Brady sits at 4,773 passing yards during his Michigan football career. On Michigan’s first drive of the game, JJ McCarthy marched his Wolverines down the field, passing Tom Brady in school history and opening the game with a 7-0 lead over the Spartans.

With his new passing yardage total, JJ McCarthy is now 9th in Michigan football history when it comes to passing yards. His next step? Passing Jim Harbaugh, who sits at No. 8 all-time with 5,214 passing yards during his days as QB1 for Michigan football.

Last weekend, following Michigan’s win over Indiana at the Big House, JJ McCarthy was asked about his stats and what they mean to him. The short version is that he could care less about his own numbers — he is just focused on winning a national title with Michigan football.

“(Moving up in program record books) means a lot because of the amount of blood, sweat, and tears that all those former quarterbacks and every former Michigan Wolverine put in to get to where we are right now,” the Michigan football quarterback said. “But at the end of the day, stats — you know me, it doesn’t matter at all. It doesn’t matter where I am on the leaderboards, or anything like that. I’ll look at those when I leave this place. But just on to the next week.”
