Michigan State football has picked up a commitment from a fourth quarterback this offseason in the former of a North Dakota transfer.

The Michigan State football quarterback room is dramatically different than it was just a month ago. While it is different, one thing that this quarterback room and the one last year have in common is experience — oh, and youth (so two things).

Last year, Michigan State didn’t have a quarterback who had a lot of playing experience going into the season, and you could argue the same thing with this year’s room until now. While Aidan Chiles did get playing time last year at Oregon State, Michigan State needed a quarterback with a lot of experience behind him. It would be a hard ask to have two freshmen playing right behind Chiles and it now seems like that won’t have to happen.

That’s because Michigan State landed North Dakota quarterback transfer Tommy Schuster on Sunday morning.

Who is Tommy Schuster and what type of quarterback is Michigan State getting? He’s a very experienced quarterback who holds the career record for passing yards and touchdowns at North Dakota. Not only has he thrown for over 9,000 yards in his career, but he is also very accurate. Schuster is very much a pocket passer as he didn’t run a lot at North Dakota and probably won’t at Michigan State either. He is the perfect type of quarterback that Michigan State needs.

Schuster is someone who is not only going to bring experience but he is actually from Michigan. He is going to end up being the backup quarterback probably but if you have a guy like him who played very well at North Dakota as your No. 2, that’s a pretty good sign that you have a backup that you can trust.
