Michigan's plan at head coach for Jim Harbaugh's suspension is bonkers

Jim Harbaugh is a mad man. That's the only possible explanation for his plan for Michigan during his three-game suspension to start the 2023 season.

Per ESPN's Pete Thamel, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter will serve as head coach in the season-opener against East Carolina.

In Week 2 against UNLV, offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Sherrone Moore will split head-coaching duties with special teams coordinator and safeties coach Jay Harbaugh during the first half while run game coordinator/running backs coach Mike Hart will coach the second half.

Moore will coach solo in Week 3 against Bowling Green.

Got that? Neither do we.

It's truly an unorthodox plan but it should work for the Associated Press' preseason No. 2 Wolverines. Their first three opponents went a combined 19-19 in 2022. The move also gives the four fill-in coaches a great experience leading a Power Five program.

Heck, one might even succeed Harbaugh if he ever returns to the NFL (sorry, Michigan, but that speculation is going to be around as long as he's in Ann Arbor).

But that's also a lot of cooks in the kitchen, particularly against UNLV. If one coach wants to go for it and the other says punt, who is the tiebreaker? Or do they take turns making big decisions?

That's a problem for the Wolverines to solve, thanks to Harbaugh.

Instead of doing something simple and normal like picking one interim head coach, his scheme is another wrinkle in a saga that, according to Michigan, all stems from a cheeseburger. (The NCAA refutes that idea.)

Harbaugh was originally suspended four games by the NCAA for impermissible recruiting visits during the COVID-19 dead period, but that ruling was later vacated by the committee on infractions. Michigan issued its own three-game suspension of Harbaugh on Monday.
