Mike Elko offers hopeful injury update on running back room for Texas A&M ahead of Aggies game against Arkansas

The Texas A&M Aggies of 2025 are clearly stacked up and down the roster and it's paying off. They're 6-0, outscoring opponents 208-122 on the season, and no matter what injuries or other factors lead to a rotation of players at most any position the Aggies keep dominating.

Unfortunately that theory has been tested more often than head coach Mike Elko probably wants it to be at the running back position. However, the good news is that's where Texas A&M might be deepest. Le'Veon Moss is injured once again, but coach Elko offered a hopeful update when speaking with the media this week.

Key Rushing Stats for Texas A&M in 2025

  • Five different running backs have at least 27 snaps and double-digit carries this season as Texas A&M has proven to has one of the deepest backfields in the country.
  • Le'Veon Moss has 14 more carries and three more touchdowns than than any Aggies running back, so fans might think he will be missed severely, but Rueben Owens actually averages nearly a full yard more per touch than Moss this season.
  • Marcel Reed hasn't fully unlocked his rushing capabilities this year as he's averaging nearly 20 yards on the ground less than he did in 2024. He should be able to help carry a larger chunk of the rushing production if necessary.

Le'Veon Moss to miss significant time, but Aggies RBs can step up

Le'Veon Moss has already been dinged up a couple times this season. He missed four games last year, and four the year before. Moss sadly finds himself injured quite often, but the good news is–according to Mike Elko–that this time around the injury isn't season-ending. However, the Aggies star runner is going to miss some time:

"Le'Veon Moss is going to be out probably for a significant period of time. It's an unrelated injury to anything that he's been dealing with. Has nothing to do with last year. Has nothing to do with what he's been dealing with earlier this year. It's an isolated injury that happened on that tackle. It's an ankle, not a knee, which is a really positive sign. He's going to have to go get it looked at and we'll figure out where it's at. It certainly will not end his season, but it's going to be a significant amount of time."

It's a bummer that Moss is going to miss games with an ankle injury, but the Aggies running back room is still one of the best in the country. Rueben Owens has been an absolute star this year when he's been asked to step up in place of Moss, and he hasn't been the only Aggies back to impress.

Rueben Owens is actually averaging nearly a full yard more per touch than Moss this season thanks to his breakout game against Mississippi State and a handful of explosive runs earlier in the season. He'll need to keep improving with his vision and decisiveness between the tackles, but if he gets to open space Owens usually does a ton of damage with his speed and athleticism. Coach Elko seemed excited about his depth at RB as he discussed that room with media this week:

"We have a lot of really talented players [at running back]. It's why we talk a lot about just being ready. Our guys will tell you I'm fairly blunt and honest when we have these conversations. Everybody wants the football, so we go into last week with five tailbacks who all want the ball 25 times are probably capable of carrying it 25 times, but we can't do that, right? So everybody just has to stay ready. All of a sudden Lev goes down and now Rueben's got to be the primary ball carrier. That opens up some carries for Amari [Daniels] and for Jamarion [Morrow] to get in there and they give us some good runs. Amari converts a third and short. Jamarion converts a third and short. Then he gets into four-minute offense at the end of the game. Now we're able to put in a fresh EJ Smith out there–we really trust his ball security. And he rips off some really good runs."

It's clear that Texas A&M has a stable of backs who should be able to help keep the Aggies run game on pace. And if those running backs do struggle, Texas A&M could just open up the QB run game a bit more seeing as quarterback Marcel Reed still hasn't unleashed that aspect of his game as much this year. Regardless, the A&M offense should continue dominating.
