The Michigan State Spartans must be better in the trenches in 2025.
MSU has not made a bowl game since the 2021 season, and fans are starting to grow tired of losing football in East Lansing. Jonathan Smith has been tasked with turning things around.
One way the team can get back to playing postseason football is by improving its play in the trenches on both sides of the ball. The Spartans made some improvements on their offensive line, but the defensive side needs work, too.
MSU is losing some production on the defensive line, as players like D’Quan Douse, Khris Bogle, and Maverick Hansen have moved on. Defensive coaches Joe Rossi and Legi Suiaunoa are looking for players to step up and fill their roles.
The Spartans should have more depth on that side of the ball. Let’s get into MSU’s defensive line and see what it is working with.
The starters up the middle will likely be Alex VanSumeren and Grady Kelly, with Quindarius Dunningan rotating in heavily. Oregon transfer Ben Roberts has a high ceiling and could see much more action in 2025.
Nebraska transfer Ru’Quan Buckley is another player capable of taking on snaps, even though he only played 127 snaps last season, according to Pro Football Focus. Old Dominion transfer Jalen Satchell also should have a bigger role.
The Spartans could see young players earn snaps, like Derrick Simmons or Mikeshun Beeler. They have several players ready to go if needed.
Off the edge, Jalen Thompson should hold down one spot, while the other is up for grabs. Air Force transfer David Santiago is the likeliest candidate to take that spot, after he recorded three and a half sacks for the Falcons last season.
Wisconsin transfer Anelu Lafaele is an intriguing player who did not see the field for the Badgers last season but is a former four-star high school prospect. He has a clear path to earning snaps with this group.
Don’t be surprised to see Kekai Burnett or freshman Cal Thrush earn some snaps, too.
MSU must be better at stopping the run and getting after the quarterback. With all this depth and another year under this coaching staff, it has a much better chance of making that happen.

Central Michigan is facing NCAA discipline over their small role in the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal. Central Michigan received a formal Notice of Allegations from the NCAA in late June, according to Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press. This stems from Stalions’ unexplained appearance on the Chippewa sideline during a Sept. 1, 2023 game against Michigan State. The school has 90 days to formally respond to the NCAA letter. In a statement to John Brice of Football Scoop, the school disputed the receipt of a formal NOI and said it was working toward a negotiated settlement with the NCAA. The Central Michigan portion of the Stalions scandal was a particularly wild one, as the NCAA confirmed that he appeared on the Chippewas’ sideline in disguise during that 2023 game. It remains unclear how Stalions gained access to the sideline, but it was considered part of the in-person sign-stealing ring Stalions is said to have constructed on the Wolverines’ behalf. It is unknown how severe Central Michigan’s punishment might be based on the NCAA’s findings. They will not be nearly as significant as the ones Michigan might face, but the Wolverines have sought to get out ahead of that with some self-imposed punishment.
The World Junior Summer Showcase is in full swing, and Maple Leafs top prospect Ben Danford is shattering expectations, truly proving how good of a player he can be. The Toronto Maple Leafs' defensive prospect, Ben Danford, is among the 44 players who were invited to Hockey Canada's World Juniors Summer Showcase. Hockey Canada finally unveiled the 44 prospects who will head to Minnesota for the showcase, after they held the roster release back while the organization dealt with several injuries, which begins Sunday and runs through August 2 in Minneapolis. Defensive prospect Ben Danford is the only Maple Leafs player invited to the annual showcase, where Canada's World Junior staff will get their first look at what their team might look like for the 2026 World Juniors, which will also take place in Minnesota in December. Danford is being called the best player at the World Juniors Summer Showcase Danford has been exceeding expectations, and one source revealed that he has been the best player at the World Junior Showcase so far. The source said Danford is steady, smart, and hard to ignore on the ice. 'Ben Danford has been the best player at the World Junior Showcase he's steady, smart, and impossible to ignore. Makes every shift count, whether he's breaking up plays or starting the rush. Canada's blue line is in good hands.' - An unnamed source The Maple Leafs selected Danford with their first pick (31st overall) at the 2024 NHL Draft. During his visit to Toronto's development camp earlier this month, the defender revealed that he's receiving mentorship from current Leafs defensemen as well as some alumni like Mark Giordano. The 6-foot-2 Danford could make for an excellent fit for Canada should he make the team. He is responsible in his own end, and he demonstrated leadership capabilities when he was named captain of the Oshawa Generals ahead of the 2024-25 OHL season.
Last season, Josh Giddey took a big leap after being traded from the Oklahoma City Thunder. With the Chicago Bulls, the Australian point guard was instrumental in getting them to the Play-In Tournament, going 39-43. The No. 10 seed was somewhat expected, but the record was better than people anticipated. Giddey averaged 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game, taking his offense to another level. His shooting splits improved as well, and his overall leap has resulted in the 22-year-old asking for big money amid restricted free agency. Still unsigned, Giddey is reportedly desiring at least $8 million more than what the Bulls are currently offering. In a recent article from Fred Katz and Joel Lorenzi of The Athletic, NBA executives gave their thoughts on what they think Giddey is worth and the overall contract dispute. One executive believed $100 million over four years was fair. “Giddey is the anomaly because he might be good enough to be a four-year player,” the executive said. “Nobody wants to go with long-term contracts because everybody wants this idea of flexibility. You wanna have the ability to (say), ‘You know what? My team’s not very good. Let’s pivot.’” Some other executives proposed three-year deals, ranging from $54 million to $75 million in total money. Cap space around the NBA has become extremely limited, and Chicago may not be willing to make such a long-term commitment to the former lottery pick. One person polled cited the Patrick Williams contract as a reference point for the Bulls. “Chicago gave (Williams) five years, $90 million with a player option,” the executive said. “He didn’t show much and got that deal entirely based on them drafting him top five and (his) perceived potential.”
San Francisco 49ers fans will probably remember the name Trey Lance as long as they live due to how big a bust he was for the franchise. They drafted him third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft and sent a trade package that included three first-round picks to do it. And their return on investment crashed and burned right before their eyes. He now has another chance to prove he belongs at the NFL level and try to separate himself from the "bust" label that might as well be written on the back of his jersey in the minds of fans. The Los Angeles Chargers have elected to name him the starter for the Hall of Fame game this Thursday, July 31, against the Detroit Lions. Former 49ers QB Trey Lance set to start for the Chargers in the Hall of Fame game During his time with the 49ers, Lance made four starts and only dressed for eight regular-season games. He recorded 797 passing yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions as a 49er. Injuries derailed him from ever creating any momentum on the field, but the on field product was also simply not good enough. It became apparent to the 49ers that their seventh-round pick a year after drafting Lance was a better starter option for the time being. That QB, of course, is Brock Purdy, who still to this day holds the title as the 49ers starter and has led the team to two NFC Championship appearances and even punched their ticket to appear in one Super Bowl. While the Lance situation may never feel great for 49ers fans, many likely feel that things worked out significantly better than they could have, thanks to Purdy. Now Purdy is one of the highest-paid QBs in the NFL, and Lance is battling to be a QB two in Los Angeles and will likely need to show out in the preseason to win the job.
