Pro Football Focus has issued its 2025 College Football Playoff predictions – spotlighting the national power landscape heading into the second year of the expanded 12-team format. As expected, Texas is very much in the mix for both Max Chadwick and Dalton Wasserman.
This group of predictions once again reinforces the widespread sentiment the Longhorns will be a major contender with Arch Manning under center.
Let's take a look at what Chadwick and Wasserman think of this year's playoff field and who they each predict to win it all.
In the first round, Chadwick thinks Alabama takes down Boise State, Oregon defeats LSU, Ohio State takes down Texas Tech, and Georgia outlasts Miami. In the quarterfinals, Clemson beats Georgia, Penn State defeats Ohio State in a Big Ten CFP matchup, Alabama beats Notre Dame in the Blue Blood Bowl, and Texas defeats the Oregon Ducks.
In the semifinals, Clemson beats Alabama and Texas outlasts Penn State. Then, in the national championship game, the Longhorns fall to the Clemson Tigers.
"Who has the best roster from top to bottom? This season, I believe it's Clemson. The Tigers boast the best offense in college football along with the third-best defense," Chadwick said. "Not only does Clemson have incredible depth, but the team also has a few superstars. Three of the top 10 players on the PFF College 50 are Clemson Tigers, more than any other school.
"Texas and Penn State were certainly tempting as two semi finalists from last season who brought back a ton of talent and made key additions in the transfer portal," Chadwick said. "But I’m banking on head coach Dabo Swinney to win his third national championship in 2025 with one of the most loaded rosters of his tenure."
Wasserman's first round has Ohio State defeating Boise State, Notre Dame beating Arizona State, Utah taking down Big Ten rival Oregon, and Texas A&M beating SEC counterpart Georgia. In the quarterfinals, he has Clemson defeating the Aggies, Alabama taking down the Utes, Penn State beating Notre Dame, and Texas beating Ohio State in a Week 1 rematch.
In the semifinals, Wasserman has Clemson defeating Texas in a CFP rematch and Alabama taking down Penn State. In the title game, the Crimson Tide are victorious over the Clemson Tigers.
"I agree with Max that Clemson, Texas, Penn State and Alabama are likely the four most talented teams in college football. If the Crimson Tide can get consistent passing production from first-year starter Ty Simpson, then they are fully equipped to win a national championship.
"This will be an interesting year with regard to talented teams and their quarterback situations. Some like Penn State, LSU and Clemson possess high-end starters who we’ve come to know for multiple years," Wasserman said. "Other powerhouses like Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Notre Dame and Ohio State enter this season with new full-time starters. The performances of those young players will be a major factor in this year’s playoff race."
Again, this is yet another national analyst duo which thinks a Manning-led offense will have enough firepower to make it to the CFP field and make deep runs. If Steve Sarkisian can get enough out of Manning, the offensive line holds up, and the run game is as advertised, you have to think as a Texas fan the defense gives you as good a shot as any.
