National college football voice calls out Georgia Bulldogs HC Kirby Smart for 'whining'

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart, based on the last several years of results (and the fact that Nick Saban is now retired), is the best coach in college football.

But that doesn't mean he's immune from criticism.

And Smart is receiving plenty of criticism this week due to his incessant complaining about the College Football Playoff committee's approach to the playoff rankings.

Smart seemingly never misses an opportunity to yell into the microphone about playoff rankings, the difficulties of playing in the SEC on the road (he's not wrong), and whatever other complaint comes to his mind.

And Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt is tired of it.

“Kirby is a great coach,” said Klatt. “In a lot of cases, I would consider him one of, if not the, best coach in college football. This is the Kirby that I least like. I really love almost everything that he does, until we get into this mode. I cannot stand the politicking that happens down there incessantly. They rant and rave about, ‘Well, you don’t know what these schedules are like.’ Like, I’m sorry. I just can’t. Georgia should be rated higher than Miami. Maybe the committee is just tired of you whining after the games. That could be it.”

Klatt is pretty much spot on there. We all know that Smart is an elite football coach. Whether you root for Georgia or not, it's impossible to ignore what he's accomplished since taking over as the head coach in Athens nearly a decade ago.

But the constant politicking is exhausting. Smart tries to pretend like he doesn't pay attention to the media or the playoff rankings, yet he's always talking about the committee or who picked against Georgia, etc. It almost always leads to a collective eye-roll from college football fans around the country.

Klatt, by the way, isn't the only prominent college football voice to point out how annoying Smart's media sessions have become.

Fox Sports' Tim Brando also went off on Smart this week.

"When I hear Kirby Smart in a post-game interview say 'well just tell all those people to come down here to the SEC and see how their record looks', I'm so sick and tired of hearing Kirby Smart tell me how everyone picks against him," said Brando earlier this week. "Ok, you've won two national titles. You've already been anointed by the good ole boys of the south as the next Nick Saban. And all you can do is shovel crap in the media's face because they don't pick you to win a certain game? Come on. Get over it, Kirby. You're better than that. I mean, you're better than that. Enough. It's a tired, old, fatigued storyline that he keeps spewing out of his mouth."

This shouldn't be what college football is about. But the new 12-team playoff, and the ridiculous and incredibly pointless (and probably harmful to the sport) playoff rankings show that ESPN airs each week, has caused college football to devolve into nothing more than a debate about schedules and the strength of various conferences. Is this really what we want the sport to be? The month of November used to be one of the most fun months of the college football season. Now it's just a month of talking heads arguing about resumés (and these debates are pointless....no one is ever going to agree...it's just a giant waste of time).

Smart could help shift the tone of the sport by just focusing on the games when he speaks to the media. But I wouldn't count on that changing anytime soon. Smart's a great coach, but the whining and politicking seem to be part of his DNA.
