This will be head coach Jeff Hafley's fourth season at Boston College, and he needs to show improvement. After back to back six-win campaigns, the Eagles won only three games a season ago. If they do not improve on that this season they might start looking at alternatives. Being mediocre was not acceptable for the previous regime, even though this is a program that only had occasional flashes of real success.
The question with Boston College is how do they win? In the past, they used to be super physical and run a pro-style offense with success. Once a cycle they would have some NFL-bound offensive linemen and really punish people. Under Hafley, the defense was expected to improve a lot and that hasn't happened. They are always fighting to find enough talent to compete with even the middle of the ACC. They used to shock teams at the top.
Over 5.5 -125 / Under 5.5 +100
The Eagles are one of the least talked about teams in the Power 5. Ever since they joined the ACC they have been on a steady downward decline. They just never seemed to get the coach right after Tom O'Brien left for the NFL. This line did catch my eye a little because of how it is shaded to the over. Boston College would need to double their win total from a season ago to get there. That is possible when you only win three games but I am not sure what the narrative is behind it, other than the schedule.
Boston College needs to be a lot better on both sides of the ball if they want to take advantage of a very favorable schedule. They should win all of their home nonconference games, which would get them half of the way to that over (and they might be able to win at Army too). In ACC play, they avoid Clemson and get to play the teams that the consensus thinks are in even worse shape than they are (Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Georgia Tech). They could not ask for a better slate to give the coach a chance to keep his job. Just a little improvement might show up a lot.
Last season the Eagles could only muster 17ppg. That is hard to win with even if you have a good defense, which they didn't. The roster has turned over a lot which will prove to be a good or bad thing, it is hard to know right now. I like the coach but if you are going to lean into improvement it is all about that schedule and staying healthy. The transfer portal has killed the depth at schools like Boston College. I am leaning toward the over due to the schedule but this is a team that is probably better to back game to game. This team is too unpredictable to make a real bet right now.
