Dylan Raiola will take over the starting quarterback job at for the Nebraska Cornhuskers this upcoming season after a strong showing under center in 2024. However, there are some significant questions about the depth behind him, specifically regarding the race for backup quarterback position.
The program has two quarterbacks, Jalyn Gramstad and TJ Lateef, vying for spots.
Head coach Matt Rhule recently updated the quarterback room and praised both of his backups.
"I don't think there's a guy in the locker room that wouldn't follow Jalyn Gramstad into battle," Matt Rhule said via On3.com. "And I believe that he can get it done for us. He's getting a lot of reps; he's done a really nice job. The other guys have worked hard."
Gramstad, a redshirt transfer, stood out for Northwestern College in Iowa. He was the NAIA Player of the Year in 2023, throwing for 3,681 yards and 35 touchdowns.
Rhule also praised Lateef, a four-star recruit committed to Nebraska from Orange Lutheran High School in California. Despite being a freshman, he is already turning heads and making an impression this offseason.
“I think it's important for TJ to get some opportunities… I like his competitive fire," Rhule said. "I like his intelligence; I like his athleticism. He throws a really accurate ball. Catchable. He knows where to go with it. So, I think it's important he gets those reps."
With a talented quarterback room led by Raiola and supported by promising players, there is a lot to be excited about heading into the 2025 season.
