Nebraska Cornhuskers Focus On Getting Stronger Every Day

For college football teams, making a move from on-field workouts to in-the-gym strength training helps players get ready to face off against top competition. Corey Campbell has his work cut out for him with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but the players are responding.

Campbell is focusing on having the Nebraska football players getting in their reps with free weights, squats, and other gym movements. So far, the players are responding well to his leadership.

“In year one, guys are learning the process,” Campbell said, according to Sports Illustrated. ”In year two, they’re living it. And, by the time you get to year three, guys start to defend the process.”

July is a time where NCAA rules keep coaches' involvement with players limited. Because of this, Nebraska coaches are having to trust Cornhuskers players to do their work with intention.

Corey Campbell, Matt Rhule setting expectations for Nebraska football players

“Make sure you guys understand what you’re working towards,” Campbell said. “Be intentional in the work that you do.”

What Campbell and Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule hope will happen is that this training process becomes a part of the players' routine. The more that Nebraska players are focused on their day-in, day-out responsibilities, the more that they can carry that over into the season.

“By the time it hits fall camp, it’s going to be engrained in them and be second nature,” Campbell said.

This is the goal of Campbell and Rhule: Making sure the players know what is expected of them. It's about culture, putting the right processes in place so that the Cornhuskers can be ready to capture a Big Ten championship.
