Nebraska HC Matt Rhule on veteran Huskers players: 'I think they're sick and tired of being sick and tired'

Matt Rhule is looking to turn the Nebraska Cornhuskers around.

Sure, he objectively failed as an NFL head coach, but he was an extremely successful college coach before that stint with the Carolina Panthers. He knows how to build a program from the ground up, as evidenced by his 28-23 record at Temple followed by a stint rebuilding Baylor that culminated in an 11-3 season in 2019.

That's why Nebraska brought Rhule in. Not only does he need to change the on-field product for the once proud program, but he needs to change the culture as well. Nebraska hasn't had a winning record since 2016. That's a lot of losing, but if there is any silver lining in what Rhule has inherited in Lincoln, it's the fact that his upperclassmen are sick of losing. They're ready to put in the work to win.

"They're so focused. The older guys here are really focused and I think they're sick and tired of being sick and tired," Rhule said when asked how his older players approached the first day of fall camp. "They don't give you wins. You've got to earn wins. They have a sense of, 'Hey, let's get this done.'"

If there is any positive for Nebraska heading into 2023 it's that Rhule has gotten off to a quick start rebuilding the talent on the roster. His 2023 class was ranked No. 25 in the nation and his 2024 class is currently ranked No. 20.

It's also going to be tough for things to get much worse after program hero Scott Frost was absolutely disappointed in his five-ish seasons with the Huskers. After winning a national championship for the Huskers as a quarterback and going 19-7 in his first head coaching stint at UCF, the expectation was that Frost would be the hero once again for Nebraska football.

Instead, he went 16-31 and was fired after just three games in 2022.

There's almost no way things will be worse under Rhule in Lincoln.
