Travis Hunter enjoyed a dual role on the gridiron during his tenure with the Colorado Buffaloes. The No. 2 overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft is likely to keep both wide receiver and cornerback duties in his rookie season with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
However, NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah is concerned about the toll it would take on Hunter to play both WR and CB in the NFL. He appeared on "The Rich Eisen Show" and talked about the potential impact of the two-way role.
Rich Eisen started the conversation by saying that Hunter is not going to be 22 forever, and the franchise can't be cautious when they are up against the big names. It will expect the rookie to play 100 snaps rather than care about his long career.
Eisen then asked Jeremiah about the longevity of Hunter's two-way thing.
"You don't know until you do it," Jeremiah said. "We hadn't really seen it at the collegiate level, and he pulled it off. We can all have theories of 'can you do this at the NFL level with grown men in a more physical environment?' But looking at his pictures right now, it's hard to argue against that."
"This guy is built a little different... Once he is comfortable enough and has a working knowledge of everything he needs to know on both sides of the ball, I think there's a little bit of an experiment here."
Jeremiah added that we have to wait and watch if Hunter can live up to the dual role in the NFL, and if he can play those 100 snaps, the value he offers is insane. However, the co-host of the "Move The Sticks" podcast has his own concerns about Hunter's dual responsibilities.
"My concern is the physicality on the defensive side of the ball," he said. "I think in the NFL at corner, you have more physical responsibilities than you do in college in the NFL. They're going to pull him in closer to the line of scrimmage."
"They're going to design run games where he is going to be the unblocked defender and he is going to have to tackle 230-pound grown men, repeatedly. That builds throughout a very, very long season."
Jeremiah isn't worried about the hits Hunter is going to take during offensive plays, as the analyst believes the game has become safer in that regard. Getting all those snaps while doing a cornerback's job as well is a massive task, and that's what Jeremiah finds concerning.
All eyes are on the Jaguars’ top rookie after the team made a bold move to trade up for the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, parting with next year’s first-rounder and more in the process. Balancing the demands of both roles won't be easy, especially with sky-high expectations.
