Will Howard had a special final college football season with the Ohio State Buckeyes after spending four years at Kansas State.
When Ohio State needed a transfer quarterback from the portal following Kyle McCord’s departure, Howard turned out to be exactly what the Buckeyes needed. He performed well on the field and, perhaps more importantly, proved to be a strong leader for the team.
Heading into the NFL Draft, many expected the former Ohio State quarterback to be selected in the third or fourth rounds. Instead, Howard was picked by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth round—a return to his home state of Pennsylvania.
NFL analyst Chris Simms recently offered insight into why he believes Howard wasn’t selected earlier in the draft.
“Why isn’t Will Howard being talked about as a first-round or a second-round quarterback? I don’t know, because his arm is below average. He’s not incredibly accurate, and he’s not the greatest athlete in the world… it’s just the expectations. There’s a bunch of first-round players on the football team with him. [Howard] is getting the benefit of how awesome the team is there.”
Simms argued that Howard was somewhat propped up by the talent around him—a point that’s at least partially true. Jeremiah Smith, Emeka Egbuka, Carnell Tate, Quinshon Judkins, and TreVeyon Henderson were elite weapons. Still, Howard proved his value and was clearly a major upgrade over McCord from the previous season.
Howard completed 73 percent of his passes for 4,010 yards and 35 touchdowns, adding seven rushing scores. He was especially impressive down the stretch in the College Football Playoff. With strong intangibles, he may have what it takes for a long NFL career. Time will tell if that potential comes to fruition.
