NFL legend Brett Favre says he was shocked to learn Deion Sanders had been quietly battling bladder cancer.

During an interview with TMZ Sports, Favre shared his shock and relief after Sanders revealed this week that he had undergone surgery to remove his bladder following the discovery of a malignant tumor.

“It totally shocked me,” said Favre, who played alongside Sanders for a season with the Atlanta Falcons. “Thank God they found it and it was a successful surgery. I’m just thankful that the prognosis looks good.”

Sanders, 57, broke the news during a press conference on Monday, announcing that he is now cancer-free. He credited his medical team for catching the disease early and said the experience has only deepened his faith. After spending three months recovering at his Texas estate, Sanders returned to his role as Colorado’s head football coach.

“I have never questioned God,” Sanders told Michael Irvin. “I can’t ask, ‘Why me?’ when He’s blessed me with so much. Why me to have this wonderful family, this coaching opportunity, this platform? I just asked the Lord to show me what He wants me to do.”

Sanders acknowledged the challenges of his recovery, including the drastic lifestyle changes since having his bladder removed. Still, he’s embraced the journey ahead of him. Sanders also urged others to get routine health screenings, revealing that his cancer was discovered during a vascular scan meant to monitor blood clots.

Back in Boulder, Sanders said it was “unbelievable” to be back around his players. After leading the Buffaloes to a 9-4 record last season, Sanders will try to keep the program on track despite losing star quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter to the NFL.

Favre, who was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease himself, praised Sanders’ resilience. He recalled that Deion always practiced like it was the Super Bowl, which is a mentality he sees carrying over into his battle with cancer.

“I’m not surprised he’s digging his heels in and going to keep coaching,” Favre said. “Not that he needs my advice, but just keep doing what you’re doing. You’re inspiring so many people. Just keep it rolling.”
