Nick Saban becomes highest-paid coach in country with eight-year, $93.6 million extension

The Alabama football team was recently ranked No. 1 in the AP preseason college football poll. Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban is on top of the proverbial heap of big-name leaders again too, as the 70-year-old agreed to a lucrative, long-term contract extension with the program on Tuesday.

The deal is for eight years and $93.6 million and doesn't expire until February 2030, at which point, Saban will be 79 years old.

Per Suttles, the average yearly salary over the length of the contract of $11.7 million and Saban’s 2022 salary will be $10.7 million, before rising all the way up to $12.7 million in 2029. The five-time SEC Coach of the Year had been slated to make $9.9 million this year before the extension.

Prior to the new extension, Saban had only trailed Georgia's Kirby Smart for the title of highest-paid coach in CFB. Smart signed a 10-year contract in July with a salary of $10.25 million and an average value of $11.25 million.
