Nick Saban breaks down final play against Texas A&M

The final play of No. 3 Alabama's thrilling 24-20 victory over Texas A&M inspired a lot of hot takes about Jimbo Fisher's ineffective play design, and Alabama head coach Nick Saban's breakdown of the final play reveals just how prepared Alabama was for that decisive moment.

"They scored a touchdown earlier on the same formation," Saban said.

"We were playing everybody inside-out" on the second quarter scoring play, said Saban, which allowed wide receiver Moose Muhammed III to score on an out route from the 5-yard line.

"Because they had done that, we wanted to change the leverage on everybody," the Alabama head coach said. In his breakdown of the game film, Saban demonstrated that Fisher's decision to keep the running back in tight on the formation as a pass blocker instead of utilizing him as a pass catcher allowed a double-team on the Aggies receiver split out wide to the right of the formation. That is where quarterback Haynes King eventually tried to complete the game-winning pass.

"If the [running] back fast releases, [defensive back DeMarcco Hellams] is covering him," which would have meant single coverage on Texas A&M wide receiver Evan Steward. But as Saban revealed, Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold had a decent position on Stewart, making the throw a difficult one to complete regardless.

"We're trying to cover all the bases, obviously ... and you can see how it came out," Saban said. With his dissection of this past Saturday's final play, Saban showed just how many steps ahead he is of his former assistant.
