The Michigan Wolverines have not lost to Nebraska since 2013, having won four straight games in their series against the Cornhuskers.
The two teams share a colorful history as they split the 1997 national championship with Brian Griese leading Michigan to an undefeated season and Scott Frost doing the same for the Cornhuskers in then-coach Tom Osborne's swan song season.
Michigan's road contest against the Cornhuskers is set for Saturday, September 21 in Lincoln, a game that most media and fans expect to be close considering the circumstances, which include Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore's second and final suspension game of the year.
This past weekend, former Alabama coach and College Gameday host Nick Saban sent a warning to Michigan fans ahead of their road contest that offers a glimpse into where his mind is at on the matchup.
Saban spoke about the challenges Michigan was set to face with Moore unable to coach due to a suspension dating back to in-person sign stealing allegations against former low level staffer Connor Stalions.
Saban noted that Moore was able to be at practice this past week leading up to Michigan's win over Central Michigan.
He called the Wolverines' game against Nebraska the real challenge.
"The real challenge comes next week when Sherrone Moore can't be at practice," Saban said.
"That's going to be the toughest adjustment. When I had COVID and had to sit out, at least I could stay at home watch practice on Zoom and talk to the team after -- so, I still felt engaged. But if he can't go to practice at all (as is the case this coming week), he's going to feel totally out of sync."
Michigan acting head coach Biff Poggi said after Saturday's win that Moore is like famous pro golfer Tiger Woods and he is like a golf caddy, adding that he will make sure that Michigan "plays the right clubs."
The Wolverines looked disheveled and unprepared on the road against Oklahoma in their first road game of the season previously as the Sooners confused freshman QB Bryce Underwood into a 9-for-24 passing night.
Michigan will need a better effort from Underwood on the road next Saturday to bring home the win, and this time around he will likely have help from Marlin Klein, one of Michigan's top blockers and receivers, who sat out the OU game.
The Wolverines got plus performances from several young players against Central Michigan who could help turn the tide in Lincoln, including freshman receiver Andrew Marsh and tight end Hogan Hansen, whose early catch against the Chippewas set the tone for a banner day on offense in the Big House.
Saban knows the road will be a difficult one, now it's up to Michigan to prepare for another emotionally charged game against a team in need of a program-defining win at home.
