The Texas Tech Red Raiders showed earlier this offseason that they are all in on the football program, landing one of the best hauls of transfer portal players in the nation going into the 2025 season. That philosophy appears to be stretching into the future as well, with the Red Raiders now staying hot on the recruiting trail, landing the No. 1 ranked player in the 2027 class — 5-star EDGE Ladamion Guyton.
Guyton announced on Thursday that he would commit to Texas Tech over the likes of the Georgia Bulldogs, South Carolina Gamecocks, and Tennessee Volunteers.
Guyton is now the first member of Texas Tech's 2027 class, which ranks No. 20 in the cycle.
If you don't know the name Ladamion Guyton yet, it likely won't be long before you do. Standing at 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, Guyton is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 2 player in the 2027 class, and the No. 1 EDGE. However, On3/Rivals rates Guyton as the No. 1 player in the class.
Guyton is a Georgia native, and is rated as the No. 1 ranked player in the state, which makes it a relative surprise that he chose to play somewhere outside of Athens, under Kirby Smart. Ultimately, though, the Red Raiders were able to get him to Texas, moving him from the SEC to the Big 12.
"Twitchy two-point edge rusher with the snap anticipation, change of direction, and initial quickness to disrupt plays before they get started," 247Sports' Hudson Standish said of Guyton. "Potentially versatile rush piece who could supercharge a front seven early in his collegiate career. Should be viewed as a potential early-round NFL Draft selection."
The Red Raiders have had a solid football program for the past couple of decades, but they're making a large investment in it going forward. That much was apparent in the 2025 transfer portal, where Texas Tech brought in 21 players out of the portal with some big money offers. They landed potential stars like David Bailey, Howard Sampson, Romello Height, and Quinten Joyner.
Going into the 2025 season, the Red Raiders will rely on Behren Morton under center, but the defense should be improved, and the skill positions are in great shape, with Joyner, Reggie Virgil, and Coy Eakin leading the way.
In the 2026 recruiting class, Texas Tech also made a significant splash, landing a commitment from 5-star OT Felix Ojo, the No. 6 player and No. 1 tackle in the nation, according to 247Sports.
