Northwestern has been out of its normal house for two seasons as renovations were underway.
It played in one of the most gorgeous little settings in college football for most of the two years, and then had to deal with playing on a baseball field for the last two games.
It lost in a gut-punch fight with Michigan, and made up for it by pulling off a thriller over Minnesota to get bowl eligible.
Meanwhile, just when it seemed like Illinois was getting its groove back, it couldn’t do anything right in a weird 27-10 loss to Wisconsin.
Both teams are bowl eligible, so that pressure is off. Now it’s about owning the state of Illinois in what should be an emotionally-charged battle as good as any Big Ten game this weekend.

The Wildcats have to establish the running game right away.
The Illini run defense has been terrific for most of the season - one nightmare against Indiana aside - but Wisconsin was able to crank out a few big runs and took over the game's tempo last week.
For Northwestern, it's more about establishing its control on the road. Illinois has a terrific passing game, the Wildcats usually don't - one win over Minnesota last week aside.
They're 5-0 when running for close to 200 yards or more, again, because when it doesn't ...
The Fighting Illini have to establish that passing game right away.
They never once looked comfortable against Wisconsin last week. The Badgers played with far more energy and with an emotional edge that Northwestern will likely bring from the start. Luke Altmyer and the Illinois offense can take that away with one early scoring drive.
Altymer and the Illini weren't all that bad overall, but with no blocking and a non-existent running game to help out, things quickly went south.
It's not that Northwestern can't keep up in shootouts; it's more like it's not at its best when it can't control things through the air.
The Illinois team that showed up in Madison will stay there.
This will be a far different bunch that runs out of the tunnel, partly because the home-field advantage matters in a big way. Outside of a stretch at Duke, the Illini energy really doesn't seem to travel.
Northwestern is good, but it can't be given any sort of an opening. Illinois will keep that slammed shut from the start.
