Notre Dame adds experienced defensive back transfer

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are bolstering their secondary heading into the 2023 season.

Antonio Carter is an experienced defensive back who has spent the past few seasons at Rhode Island. He's also versatile, in that he can play either cornerback or safety, but Notre Dame is planning on using him as a safety. He announced his commitment to the Irish on Twitter and also spoke with Tom Loy of 247Sports about his decision to transfer to South Bend.

"It was really the opportunity to play at a high level and showcase my talents against great schools and play for a Top 10 team," Carter said. "I'm blessed to play at a school that will showcase my talent. All of the schools offered that, but this was different. What stood out the most about Notre Dame is the fact that it's quality. Not everyone can come to a school like this. As far as academics and all that, I want to build relationships with people that can benefit me for the rest of my life. That's what I enjoyed here. They have great facilities. It's pretty chill. I was looking for a place to lock in and do what I do. I've already had my fun as a college student and already did all that, so that's not what I'm looking for. This is where I can get the job done for myself and for my team. We all felt like this is right."

Carter enrolled at Rhode Island in 2019 as a three-star recruit. He started in 10 games in 2021 with 52 tackles, one sack, seven pass deflections, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. in 2022, he started 11 games and notched 60 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 11 pass deflections.

Carter is without a doubt a massive commitment for the Irish who projects to be a difference-maker with still two years of eligibility remaining.

Florida, LSU, Kentucky Ole Miss, Wisconsin, Iowa and Texas A&M were also in the running for Carter's commitment.
