If you watched the matchup between Notre Dame and Texas A&M over the weekend as a Fighting Irish fan, the odds are that you are still trying to get in a better mood. Head coach Marcus Freeman’s squad went into the 2025 college football season with some high expectations, and most wouldn’t have predicted the year would begin with a 0-2 record.
During the team’s 41 to 40 loss to the Aggies over the weekend, the incompetence of the Irish defense under defensive coordinator Chris Ash was the biggest topic of conversation. It overshadowed the fact that a lot of good happened on the offensive side of the football, including a lot of promise from quarterback CJ Carr, a run game improvement, and several big plays. It was an overall positive day for the offense.
It appears, however, that the Fighting Irish did so even with a slight disadvantage. It was reported by Pete Sampson of The Athletic that he had heard that Carr was tipping off whether it was a run or pass play based on his pre-snap stance. Sampson’s findings were a bit unsettling.
Heard whispers last night CJ Carr tipped run/pass based on pre-snap.stance.

Sure enough, on 58 of 64 plays where Carr receives the snap, stance tells you run or pass. Feet parallel at the snap is run. Staggered stance is a drop back pass. Every stagger was pass, save one attempt
When you are preparing for a football game, you try to gain every advantage against your opposition. Film study is a huge aspect of that preparation, understanding tendencies and searching for any scrap of information that can swing an outcome in your favor. That includes during the actual game, and finding every tell possible.
When you consider that Carr had such an egregious tell in this football game, it is pretty remarkable to see just how much success the offense was able to have. They were responsible for 33 of the 40 offensive points, the initial touchdown coming off a blocked punt from Loghan Thomas. It all started with Carr behind center.
On the night, Carr completed 20 of 32 passes for 293 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Tight end Eli Raridon was the top pass catcher on the night for the Fighting Irish, hauling in four receptions for 85 yards. Wide receiver Malachi Fields wasn’t far behind with five receptions for 77 yards either, on top of Jeremiyah Love making a big pass game impact.
After a quiet first game against Miami, running backs Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price had active games in Notre Dame Stadium. They ended the night with a combined 35 carries for 162 yards and three touchdowns. Each player made big plays when the offensive line was able to open up rushing lanes.
While the tells from Carr didn’t necessarily hurt Notre Dame during this game, it is something to keep a close eye on in the future. Teams will be more and more aware of these pre-snap habits. As silly as it sounds, it could come back to hurt them in a future contest.
