Notre Dame's offensive line is in a peculiar spot heading into the 2025 season. They are considered a top 10 unit in the country by most major outlet, and they return five offensive lineman who started games in 2024. Here's the interesting part, the combination of who they have slated to start in 2025 didn't play together as a group in 2024. This is a more experienced unit that a year ago, but still relatively inexperienced.
Offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock and offensive line coach Joe Rudolph will have to rely on some veteran leadership in the room to build the foundation of the offensive line, and that starts with offensive guard Billy Schrauth who Lindy's Sports ranked as the No. 7 offensive guard in the country ahead of the 2025 season.
Schrauth took over as the starter at right guard the final three games of the regular season in 2023. He played 181 total snaps in the final three games and only allowed one sack which came in the Sun Bowl against Oregon State. Schrauth was slated to be their best returning starter along the offensive line, especially after expected left tackle Charles Jagusah went down with an injury in fall camp which held him out of the entire regular season.
Schrauth started the first three games of the season and picked up where he left off. He was a solid run blocker and didn't allow a single sack between the Texas A&M road opener, the home loss to Northern Illinois and the first half of the Purdue game. Unfortunately, an ankle injury sustained against the Boilermakers held him out of the Miami (OH) game, the Louisville game, the Stanford game and the Georgia Tech game.
He made his return against Navy in MetLife Stadium, this time at left guard next to true freshman left tackle Anthonie Knapp. Knapp saw an immediate jump in consistency and performance when the veteran Schrauth stepped back into the starting lineup along side him. Schrauth was able to remain healthy for the remainder of the season and started every game from Navy to the National Championship. He totaled 700 snaps and only allowed eight total pressures all season according to PFF.
Schrauth didn't allow a single pressure against Georgia, Penn State or Ohio State and didn't allow a single sack or hit on the quarterback the entire post season. Now, in 2025, he returns to the starting lineup projected to start alongside Knapp once again at left guard. Schrauth has 15 career starts under his belt. That experience will pay major dividends with the Notre Dame's more difficult games front loaded in the first two quarters of the season.
