Notre Dame pauses football practice due to on-campus COVID-19 outbreak

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have postponed football practice for at least Wednesday and possibly Thursday after an on-campus coronavirus outbreak caused the school to suspend in-person instruction on Tuesday, as ESPN's Adam Rittenberg reports.

On Aug. 10, Notre Dame claimed that only 33 students out of 11,836 tested positive for the virus. Per Rittenberg, though, the school learned of 82 positive tests on Monday and 72 on Tuesday. Notre Dame football reported a pair of positive tests out of 117 on Aug. 10.

While Notre Dame students haven't been sent home yet, they will remain in remote learning through at least Sept. 2. Updates on football practices will come at a later time.

Currently, Notre Dame is scheduled to play in the ACC and take part in a season that includes 10 league games and up to one nonconference fixture. The Fighting Irish open the campaign versus Duke on Sept. 12.
