February has been a very busy month for Notre Dame, and that certainly continued on Tuesday. That made our latest Irish Breakdown show jam packed with important topics. There were team topics, recruiting topics and some college football news.
In the latest show we discuss the Notre Dame safety position and talk about whether or not the position can actually be stronger in 2024. We break down the commitment of Matty Augustine to Notre Dame, the staff being finalized the changes to the College Football Playoff format and what it means for Notre Dame.
Ryan Roberts and I break down the commitment of the talented Augustine. We dive into the back story about how this came to be, the impact on the 2025 class and depth chart, we dive into the film and we talk about what's next.
Notre Dame did not hire a new safety coach to replace the departed Chris O'Leary. Instead, Marcus Freeman hired Max Bullough to be the full-time coach, and he'll coach the linebackers. We discuss why this move happened, Bullough's chops as a coach, and we also dive into how this move, and the promotion of Mike Mickens to coach the entire secondary, on coordinator Al Golden.
The safety position will look way, way different in 2024. O'Leary is gone, DJ Brown is gone and Ramon Henderson is gone. In this segment of the show I discuss the new look safety position, the biggest questions that face the group, the newcomers and their potential impact and more. Finally, I discuss what needs to happen for the safety position to be even better in 2024, which is actually possible. Of course, there is plenty of talk about All-American Xavier Watts.
The College Football Playoff format changed to a 5+7 look. In this portion of the show I discuss why this happened, but more importantly how this impacts Notre Dame. I believe this is actually better for Notre Dame, and I explain why.
You can also watch the video with all four topics plus a mailbag.
