The Tennessee Vols made a savvy under-the-radar hire earlier this offseason when they brought in former NFL defensive coordinator Alan Williams as a senior defensive analyst.
According to VolQuest's Brent Hubbs, Williams is unofficially coaching safeties for the Volunteers, which has allowed defensive coordinator Tim Banks to serve as a "walk around" coordinator.
"I don't think enough people talk about what they did in the back end with Alan Williams, who was, at one time, the coordinator for the Vikings and then a coordinator for the Bears," explained Hubbs last week during an appearance on 104.5 The Zone's Ramon and Will. "He's coaching the safeties at Tennessee. And Tim Banks has been allowed to be a walk-around guy."
Before being hired by Tennessee earlier this year, Williams most recently served as the Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator.
Williams was hired by Chicago ahead of the 2022 season. He stunningly resigned from the Bears just two games into the 2023 season due to "health and family concerns".
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Williams resigned "in part because of inappropriate activity".
From ESPN: Alan Williams resigned as Chicago Bears defensive coordinator last week in part because of inappropriate activity, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Williams was not involved in any criminal activity, sources told Schefter, but the Bears' human resources department was part of the process that culminated in his abrupt resignation Wednesday.
A digital forensic search was conducted as part of Williams' resignation, according to sources, who added that such a process was part of the team's standard operating procedure.

When the news broke of Williams' resignation, rumors immediately spread that the FBI had raided Halas Hall (the headquarters of the Bears). Chicago, however, quickly denied those rumors.
A team spokesman addressed the rumors regarding Halas Hall being raided today as false. We were also told that the police have not been to Halas Hall in connection to Alan Williams.

"Given the false rumors and what seems to be out there on social media, I just want to set the record straight that coach Williams has some health challenges and some family issues he’s dealing with and he thought it was the right time to take a step back and deal with those issues,” said Williams' attorney, Andrew Stroth, to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin in 2023. “He has tremendous respect for the Bears organization and he just thought it was the time to handle this health issue and his personal matters."
Williams didn't coach anywhere in 2024. It's still unclear what the "inappropriate behavior" was that led to Williams' resignation in Chicago. But whatever it was, Tennessee clearly felt comfortable hiring the longtime NFL assistant coach despite the way his time with the Bears ended.
It'll be interesting to see if Vols head coach Josh Heupel is asked about Williams and the end of his tenure with the Bears during SEC Media Days next month.
