Ohio State Adds Key QB in Transfer Portal: Report

Ohio State Buckeyes continue to fine-tune their roster ahead of the 2025 season, making a notable move by adding veteran quarterback Eli Brickhandler from the transfer portal. After winning a national title last season, the Buckeyes face the challenge of replacing starting QB Will Howard. With a young and relatively untested quarterback room, head coach Billy Fessler seems intent on adding experienced depth and Brickhandler fits the bill.

Eli Brickhandler arrives in Columbus with three seasons of college football under his belt. He began his career at North Carolina A&T before transferring to Houston Christian in 2024, where he appeared in eight games. Though his numbers weren’t overwhelming, 49.4% completion rate for 557 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions, his experience alone adds value to an otherwise young group of signal-callers.

With sophomore Julian Sayin and junior Lincoln Kienholz battling it out for the starting role, neither of whom has a career start, Brickhandler offers a steady presence in the QB room. True freshman Tavien St. Clair is the only other scholarship quarterback currently on the roster.

Brickhandler’s addition may not guarantee immediate starting reps, but it brings maturity and competition to a critical position. As Ohio State reloads for another title run, the move signals their commitment to building depth and stability at quarterback. Brickhandler joins a program rich in expectations, and while his path to the starting job isn’t clear, his presence could prove vital as a mentor and backup.

This transfer could be exactly what Ohio State needs to ensure their quarterback room is prepared, not just for the start of the season but for the long haul.
