Ohio State, Alabama traveling to Miami for national title game

Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day assured media members on Thursday that his team would be ready to face the Alabama Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday night despite reported COVID-19 issues impacting the Buckeyes.

Both Ohio State and Alabama have since confirmed they're traveling to Miami for the contest, as scheduled.

"The plan is to fly down tomorrow," Buckeyes spokesman Jerry Emig said on Friday, per Heather Dinich of ESPN.

Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne tweeted his program is also good to go.

While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Day explained that Ohio State will have "plenty of players" available for Monday but added that his team has dealt with some complications following the win over the Clemson Tigers on Jan. 1.

"Any time you deal with that, and lose people it is a gut punch," Day said. "But it's not something we're not used to. We've had starters all over the place down. We've just found ways to work through it. You can feel sorry for yourself, or you can continue to work on and push through it.

"For us, that's why the story about this season is so amazing to me. We continue to push through despite all these difficult challenges along the way, and no different this week. We got a new set of challenges this week. We're going to have to figure it out, go down to Miami and play."

CFP executive director Bill Hancock has repeatedly said this week that Ohio State and Alabama will play on Monday even though the committee set Jan. 18 as a makeup date if one or either team couldn't compete on Monday evening.

Also on Friday, ESPN's Holly Rowe announced she won't participate in the game's broadcast after she tested positive for COVID-19.
