Ohio State Buckeyes take unfortunate loss with transfer portal recruit that could come back to bite them early in the season

There aren’t many needs the Ohio State Buckeyes have this toting in the transfer portal. The Buckeyes made a few additions in the winter and have a good foundation set on contending to repeat in 2025.

However, one area in which the Buckeyes could use some depth is the defensive line. Ryan Day admitted after the spring game that the Buckeyes could take a look at that area.

"I think we've got to take a hard look at it," Day said. "I don't think I have the answer right now. But we've got to look at it. It seemed to me like there was just a lot of knockback on the offensive side of the ball here. But then again, I don't want to make any judgments until I watch the film."

Now, the Buckeyes have missed out on or of their bigger targets in the transfer portal. Ohio State losing him to Texas hurts a bit more.

Freshman All-American Syracuse DT Maraad Watson commits to Texas

According to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, former Syracuse DT Maraad Watson is heading to the Texas Longhorns. Ohio State was said to be “heavily in the mix” for Watson, who could have been a valuable piece to the interior of Ohio State’s defensive line. Ohio State will now play against Watson in Week 1 of the 2025 season.

In the winter portal window, Ohio State lost DT Hero Kanu in the portal and he too landed with the Longhorns. That loss is the prime reason that the Buckeyes could use another body on the interior.

Watson was a Freshman All-American at Syracuse with 31 tackles and a sack as a true freshman. Ohio State is replacing both Tyliek Williams and Ty Hamilton from last season’s National Championship team. Kayden McDonald and Eddrick Houston are primed to be the starters for the Buckeyes at defensive tackle.

A tough break for the Buckeyes, who are yet to receive their first transfer portal addition this spring to this point.
