Ohio State Buckeyes were saved from a major plot twist with the future of Ryan Day in Columbus after last season

The Ohio State Buckeyes’ 2024 season was truly a rollercoaster. Ohio State dropped a pair of games, and the loss to the Michigan Wolverines felt like it would be the nail in the coffin for their College Football Playoff hopes.

From there, though, the Buckeyes went on a special run to give Ryan Day his first National Championship. If the Buckeyes hadn’t secured wins over Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame, things could look a lot different in Columbus today.

Ryan Day may not be Ohio State’s coach without the title run in 2024-2025

“Honestly, they (the Days) were ready to leave Columbus,” longtime Ohio State beat writer Bull Rabinowitz recently said. “I don’t believe Ohio State would have fired him, but I do believe the Days were ready to go.”

This stems from what the Day family endured after the loss to Michigan and what they were put through in the aftermath. Every fanbase has a small group of fans who take things too far, and that group of Ohio State fans made life very uncomfortable for the Day family. The family reportedly dealt with death threats, heavy security at their home, and much more following that Michigan loss.

“At that point, I wanted to leave,” Nina Day said in Rabinowitz’s book Buckeye Brotherhood. “I felt in that moment that it was so negative, and the things my kids, Ryan, and I were dealing with were just not healthy or normal. We’re mental-health advocates, yet we were putting our kids in a situation that wasn’t healthy and was detrimental to their mental health.”

The national championship changed everything for the Day family. Coach Day is now held in high regard in Columbus and across the country. Still, the pressure remains on the Buckeyes to finally get it done against Michigan, something they haven’t done in their last four tries. They’ll get another chance on Nov. 29.
