The Ohio State Buckeyes will open the season with one of the most exciting matchups on Aug. 30 against the Texas Longhorns. Head coach Ryan Day and his team are keen to start with a win, and preparations began Thursday with the first practice session.

But just as things were about to heat up, the Buckeyes were dealt unfortunate news. Defensive tackle Eddrick Houston went down during a drill and had to be helped off the field with an apparent right leg injury, per reporter Andy Backstrom.

There are no updates on the severity of the injury, so his availability for the season opener isn’t in doubt, but he will likely miss a few days of work, if not more.

Julian Sayin had an up-and-down session Thursday, according to Backstrom. He threw an interception during the game, one that was caught by defensive back Davison Igbinosun, but again, in another instance, he successfully found receiver Carnell Tate, who beat cornerback Devin Sanchez.

The QB1 battle remains wide open, and it is still anyone’s game between Lincoln Kienholz and Sayin. The latter’s inconsistency was a pattern observed throughout the spring.

The strongest aspect of the Buckeyes this season will be their receiver room. Therefore, any quarterback under center will be able to find yardage if he can beat the defense and reach one of the talented receivers.

Day confirmed that he will keep the competition going until the very first game to incentivize both quarterbacks to push themselves hard through August.
