For one reason or another, many players have to switch positions. There are a multitude of reasons why a player would switch positions. It could be because another player is more talented at their current position and they likely won’t get playtime or it could benefit the team in a different area. The player may honestly be more suited for another position and they need to make a switch. Ohio State kicker Jake Seibert has made that change but he didn’t switch to a position that you are thinking of. Seibert has switched positions from kicker to defensive back.

He played other positions in High School

Seibert has switched from kicker to defensive back which is very unusual. According to Ryan Day, Seibert wanted to “bring some different value.” He played corner in high school as well as receiver and wanted to try different positions. Reportedly as a receiver in high school, Seibert had 57 receptions for 1,021 yards and 10 touchdowns as well as two tackles on defense. He will still focus on kicking as well but will be practicing at defensive back as well. It makes fans wonder whether we will see Seibert on the field for defense as opposed to kicking.

Seibert will still be a kicker as well, so he will still be kicking field goals as well as extra points. In his career, he has made 1-2 field goals and made all 16 extra point attempts as a true freshman backing up Blake Haubeil. Ohio State has two other kickers on the roster in Noah Ruggles and Parker Lewis who transferred from UNC and USC. Ruggles was a Lou Groza Award finalist and the expected starting kicker. He is also a preseason candidate for the trophy this year as well. Playing time would be hard to come by for Seibert which makes the position switch understandable.
