The Ohio State Buckeyes are coming off a 2024 campaign that was nothing short of a whirlwind. During the regular season, they suffered heartbreaking losses to both Oregon and Michigan — setbacks that had fans in Columbus questioning head coach Ryan Day’s future with the program.
However, once Ohio State earned a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff, the Buckeyes didn’t look back. They stormed through the postseason to capture their first national championship since 2014. A major catalyst in their title run was freshman phenom Jeremiah Smith, who now returns and is gearing up for his sophomore season in Columbus.
Summer workouts are underway, and on Thursday, Ohio State shared some exciting news: Smith was named one of the team’s three “Dudes of the Week” — an internal weekly honor given to standout performers in training. As part of the tradition, honorees pose for a photo with Coach Day to celebrate the recognition.

During his standout freshman season, Jeremiah Smith recorded 76 receptions for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns, averaging an impressive 17.3 yards per catch. In the College Football Playoff, the Buckeyes rolled past Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame — all by double digits. Over that four-game stretch, Smith continued to shine, hauling in 19 passes for more than 350 yards and five touchdowns.
Now entering his sophomore season, Jeremiah Smith is widely regarded as the top wide receiver in the country — and a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender.
The Buckeyes are set to debut a new starting quarterback, with many expecting it to be former five-star Alabama transfer Julian Sayin, who backed up Will Howard during the 2024 season.
