With the national championship game less than a week away, Ohio State coach Ryan Day has dismissed sophomore defensive end Caden Davis from his football team.
Ohio State's sports information director, Jerry Emig, confirmed that Davis is no longer a Buckeye athlete. Although he's not a key contributor, he's incredibly popular on social media. He has over 270,000 followers on TikTok and 100,000 followers on Instagram. Prior to the Cotton Bowl, he provided behind-the-scenes content for Ohio State fans.
"I pretty much just make content around football and everything that goes around here," Davis said in an interview. "Being in front of the public eye is just something I’ve always loved to do… I just love being able to create something and show what I can do and what I’m doing for my day-to-day life. Because not only do I feel it’s interesting, but I’m getting that feedback that other people do too."
While it's unclear why Davis was dismissed from the team, he did feel the need to say goodbye to Ohio State's fan base this Wednesday.
"Being a buckeye has always been a dream come true of mine since being a kid. I am so very appreciative to the coaches, staff, and players for welcoming me into the team," he wrote on Instagram. "I truly cannot thank them enough for allowing me to live my dream for the last 2 years and mentoring me the way they have. With changes in the NCAA and personal career reasons I will not be a PWO at the OSU. I appreciate the support of everyone and your help to respect my privacy about the decision made. Thank you, Go Bucks."
For what it's worth, Davis turned off comments on this social media post.
Ohio State's coaching staff will most likely be asked about Davis' departure in the coming days. If we had to guess, Day and his assistants will steer clear of this subject.
Maybe after the season officially ends, Ohio State will provide some clarity.
Ohio State and Notre Dame will square off Monday night in the national championship game. As of now, oddsmakers love the Buckeyes.
Obviously, Davis won't be on the sideline for Ohio State. It's unclear if he'll consider taking his talents and social media brand elsewhere.
We'll share more information on Davis' exit when it's available.
