Ohio State’s offense was led by Jeremiah Smith as a freshman last season, and he commanded the attention of opposing defenses from Week 1 onward.

The Buckeyes ran their offense through Smith, and that will likely be the case again in 2025. As a sophomore, the star wideout is expected to have an even bigger season as he continues to develop.

That should open up opportunities for his teammates, who could thrive as secondary options. One of Ohio State’s biggest transfer portal additions is among those expected to benefit.

National Outlet Names Ohio State TE Max Klare as a Player Not Being Talked About Enough

On3 recently compiled a list of 10 college football players who aren’t receiving enough attention heading into the 2025 season. Ohio State’s new tight end, Max Klare, was included on that list.

“You could also probably put receiver Carnell Tate on this list, but Klare steps in to help Ohio State’s passing attack as the Buckeyes reload after winning the national title. A transfer from Purdue, Klare had 51 catches for 685 yards for the Boilermakers and could be even more dangerous when surrounded by the best receiving corps in college football. Quarterback Julian Sayin is the projected starter, and he’ll have plenty of weapons at his disposal this fall.”

Klare had a breakout year with the Purdue Boilermakers last season, recording 685 receiving yards and four touchdowns. The talented tight end enters Ohio State with two years of eligibility remaining after a redshirt freshman campaign.

Ohio State hasn’t traditionally featured tight ends as offensive difference-makers, but Klare may be the most talented to come through the program in years. His addition wasn’t a necessity in the transfer portal—it was a luxury. The kind of move that supports a young quarterback. Klare will also be a valuable asset for first-year play caller Brian Hartline.

Expect the Buckeyes to rely on Klare from the very start of the 2025 season, when they open against the Texas Longhorns.
