Ohio State QB Kyle McCord finally wins over his head coach

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day hasn't necessarily thrown his full support behind starting quarterback Kyle McCord this season.

McCord, a junior, was the opening-day starter after winning the camp competition with redshirt freshman Devin Brown, but Day was pretty vocal about leaving the door open for Brown to get playing time.

Seemingly he wasn't sold on McCord as the long-term option for his team regarding the totality of the 2023 season. He didn't want to draw any hard lines regarding who would be his starter on a week-to-week basis.

That is, until now.

"We decided that Kyle is going to be the starter," Day recently said, per ESPN. "We're going to go ahead and make that distinction."

It's worth noting that McCord didn't necessarily inspire confidence in the Week 1 win against Indiana. He completed just 20-of-33 passes for 239 yards, no touchdowns and a pick. His Week 2 performance against Youngstown State was much more like it, though. McCord completed 14-of-20 passes against the Penguins for 258 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

It was a performance much more reminiscent of star Ohio State quarterbacks of the past, and it was apparently enough for Day to feel comfortable with McCord moving forward.

"It gives Kyle, first off, peace of mind that I think he realizes he is the starter," Day continued. "He earned that opportunity."
