Ohio State still unable to call QB battle between Kyle McCord and Devin Brown

The position of starting quarterback and who occupies it is of utmost importance for football programs from peewee to the NFL. At Ohio State, the starting quarterback comes with a bunch of star power as well as massive expectations.

Past starters include notable names such as C.J. Stroud, Justin Fields, Dwayne Haskins, J.T. Barrett, Cardale Jones and Braxton Miller, among others.

It's an important decision head coach Ryan Day has because, at Ohio State, the quarterback can be the difference between a great year (the bare minimum, honestly) and a national championship season. Unfortunately, Day recently revealed that he and his staff have been unable to choose between the two contenders: Kyle McCord and Devin Brown.

This, despite the fact that OSU's season opener against Indiana is only two weekends away.

“So both graded out champions in the last scrimmage. Both have gotten better. But to this point right now, I mean, as honestly as I can say it, there’s not one that won the job. There’s not one that’s lost the job,” Day said, per On3. “There’s been times over this camp where I’ve felt like one was going to take over and the other one came back. It was like a horse race and they just kept pulling away and then the other one would catch up.”

While not having a definitive starter is usually a bad thing, Day thinks that the competition, even at this point of the preseason, is good for Ohio State.

“I think first off that our staff feels confident with both of them, which is exciting. I think this is two good players getting after it. I think they’re making each other better," he said.

With Indiana not necessarily being known as a juggernaut football-wise, it's worth noting that a definite starter doesn't have to be named.

McCord, a true junior, is the more experienced of the two. He's played in 12 games over two seasons and had a start in 2021 against Akron. He's thrown for 606 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions.

Brown is a redshirt sophomore who played just 15 snaps in 2022 and took a redshirt season.

"Is there a chance that both of them could play in the first game? I think the answer is yes, that’s a chance," Day said. "But we’re going to keep working. We don’t have to make that decision right now.”
