Pros:

  • Natural Hands Catcher
Many young wide receivers fall into the trap of using their bodies to catch the football. But that's not a concern with Egbuka; he is a natural hands catcher with top-notch concentration.

  • Crisp in and out of his breaks
Egbuka's smooth transitions in and out of his breaks help him consistently create separation even without top-notch speed.

  • Football IQ
Egbuka excels against heavy zone concepts and is very willing to break off his route and sit in an opening to give his quarterback an easy hitter. He also shines when a play breaks down, and he is able to break off his designed route and be the security blanket for his QB.

  • Upside as a kick returner
He hasn't been asked to be Ohio State's go-to returner due to his value as a WR, but his upside with the new dynamic kickoff in the NFL is evident. He has great field vision after the catch, and in the new format, that matters almost more than track speed. I wouldn't be shocked if he gets significant work there early in his career.

Cons:

  • Doesn't possess burner speed
For a WR that spends most of his time out of the slot, Ebuka doesn't possess track speed by any means. I'd say he is quicker than he is fast, which is why he probably developed such a high football IQ to help him win reps.

  • Lack of experience out wide
Ebuka's solid size would allow him to play on the outside or in the slot at the pro level. I would've liked to see him have a larger number of snaps out wide to show his ability there more. Most of his wins come out of the slot on tape, which will shed doubt on his ability to do both for whichever team drafts him.

  • Medical Concerns
Egbuka has dealt with multiple injuries during his college career. As a result, he has had to miss games for two of his four years. Thankfully, he has been able to play in every game this season. But in the last draft cycle, I was told it was a concern on the minds of multiple NFL teams, and I'm sure it'll still be something teams should consider when deciding how high to rank Egbuka on their draft boards.

Player Evaluation:

The "big slot" WR role has gotten more and more popular across the NFL over the past few years. And if a team is looking to add it to their offense through the draft, Emeka Egbuka, out of Ohio State, is likely going to be their top option. Egbuka was projected to hear his name called in the late first to early second range in 2024 but elected to head back to school for one more year. He's been able to stay healthy, which is a big win, but he has seen multiple talented WRs out-produce him this year and, as a result, could jump him on draft day. Egbuka is a smart WR and should be able to carve out a role early in his career. But I think he could end up being taken further down the list of WRs in the 2025 class than many people realize.

Player Comparison:

Pro Comp: Tyler Boyd
I really like the comp of Tyler Boyd for Emeka Ebuka, especially during the peak of Boyd's career. Boyd had multiple seasons where he was a high-end WR two for the Cincinnati Bengals, which is what I view as Egbuka's ideal role at the next level. Now, while I think peak Boyd is a solid comp for Egbuka, I think he will be able to sustain that level of play for longer than Boyd did. As well as the upside to reaching heights as a player that Boyd never did.
