Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith Sends Message About Role Change for 2025 Season

Jeremiah Smith made history with his remarkable freshman season for the Ohio State Buckeyes, and the wide receiver has indicated that a change to his role for the 2025 campaign could make him even more productive.

Smith racked up 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns on 76 receptions in his first season as a Buckeye – breaking the freshman receiving record – while he also scored a touchdown on the ground, his incredible performances helping inspire Ohio State to national championship glory.

He will again be the focal point of the Buckeye offense in the forthcoming season, with Smith set to operate in a more varied capacity.

Smith has taken reps in the slot during spring practices, suggesting he could operate more regularly in that spot in 2025. Last season, Smith played 636 snaps as an outside receiver, compared to 133 in the slot, per Pro Football Focus.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday about the possibility of spending more time in the slot, Smith explained how it could impact his production in year two.

“It’s a mismatch, for sure, going against safeties and linebackers and stuff like that,” Smith said, per Eleven Warriors

"It would definitely be a mismatch come game time against teams in the season.”

Smith moving inside to the slot more regularly would likely put the emphasis on defenses to have their best cornerback follow him and ensure he is not left one-on-one with linebackers and safeties. Such a reaction could create advantages for Smith’s teammates on the outside, with Brandon Inniss among those who will be looking to capitalize on attention Smith attracts as he moves into a larger role in his third season.

For Smith, an attempt to showcase increased versatility will form part of a wider effort to somehow build on his stunning 2024 season.

Asked if there is room for improvement, Smith replied: “Definitely can improve. Always room for improvement.”

That is a scary thought for Ohio State’s opponents in 2025.
