Oklahoma has made a lot of transfer portal moves this offseason, and much of it has been on the offensive side of the football.
In addition to John Mateer, the top transfer portal quarterback in the class, the Sooners also brought in Cole Gonzales out of Western Carolina, who completed 511-of-803 pass attempts for 6,682 yards with 51 touchdowns and 22 interceptions, adding 562 yards and three touchdowns on the ground in three seasons with the Catamounts.
After spending the spring in Norman, Gonzales entered the portal and signed with the Pittsburgh Panthers a couple of weeks ago, leaving Brent Venables to look for another experienced arm ahead of 2025.
On Tuesday, they did just that, with the addition of Mercer quarterback Whitt Newbauer, according to Pete Nakos of On3 Sports.

Listed at 6-foot-6, 225 pounds, Newbauer was a freshman in 2024 and threw for 1,398 yards with 12 touchdowns and only four interceptions, helping lead the Bears to an 11-3 record on the year.
The Sooners’ newest signal-caller will enter a room with Mateer, sophomore Michael Hawkins, and true freshmen Jett Niu all established ahead of him.
But, with excellent production over nine games in 2024, he’ll be an excellent depth piece for the Sooners going into a make-or-break season in 2025.
