Oklahoma DL Jalen Redmond Shows Out at NFL Combine
USA TODAY Sports

Oklahoma defensive lineman Jalen Redmond came to Oklahoma with a 5-star recruiting profile.

NFL scouts now know why.

Redmond showed impressive athletic ability Thursday during his workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Redmond’s unofficial 40 times were the second-fastest among defensive tackle prospects, coming in at 4.85 and 4.86. His official fastest time was later updated to 4.81 seconds, which also ranked second. He also had the second-fastest 10-yard split of 1.71 seconds, all behind Pitt’s Calijah Kancey.

In earlier workouts drills, though, he blew away the competition.

Redmond posted the top vertical jump among players at his position by jumping 34.5 inches.

He also posted the top brand jump, leaping 9-feet, 8-inches.

Redmond, who made just 19 starts and played in 36 games during his of five years at OU, measured 6-foot-2 and 293 pounds.

But NFL people might not have been too aware of Redmond’s natural athletic ability.

“Redmond is a below-average athlete who plays bigger and stronger than his size might indicate,” NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein wrote in his evaluation of Redmond. “He possesses plenty of toughness but moves on heavy feet with a lack of bend that makes him a linear mover with limited playmaking potential. While he might not fill up an NFL stat sheet, he does have the base strength for consideration as a rotational 4-3 nose tackle with some block-eating elements to his game.”

Redmond was second on the team in 2022 with 10.5 tackles for loss. He finished his final season with 23 total tackles, including four quarterback sacks.

As a prospect at Midwest City, Redmond drew a 5-star rating from 247 Sports and was rated 4-star by ESPN and Rivals.

But Redmond’s career at OU was often on-again, off-again. He played in only three games in 2018 because of a life-threatening blood-clot diagnosis. He played in 13 games as a redshirt freshman and made 23 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 6.5 QB sacks.

But he sat out the entire 2020 season as doctors advised extreme caution during COVID because of his history with blood clots.

He came back in 2021 and made 19 tackles with eight TFLs and 3.5 sacks in just eight games, then played full-tilt in 2022.

Redmond finished his OU career with 32 tackles for loss and 14 quarterback sacks.
